The Visit

I spent nine hours yesterday between two different hospitals.  I had the privilege to visit with three different soldiers and friends and their families.

At the first location and I had the opportunity to pray with a friend before surgery and then sit with his wife over coffee and conversation while we eagerly awaited the news from the physician.  My thanks to Major Lloyd Hanton for sharing in this time with us.  It was a unique opportunity since I do not get to spend much time with this family otherwise.

The second visit brought me to a faithful soldier who is recuperating from surgery.  She and I had fun talking about the "old" Army in Detroit and her family.  Praying with this saint was an honor and a joy.

The final visit brought me to a long-time soldier and friend who has been declining in health for awhile.  I wore protective gloves and gear in order to protect myself from infection; however, nothing could protect me from the emotions I experienced when his big smile indicated that he knew my presence the moment he saw me.

Before each visit I prayed a simple prayer, "Lord, equip me as you have called me."

If we are going to be fully engaged in ministry, God's equipping is a necessity.  Without it, I would have felt emotionally drained and depleted after a day like yesterday.  Instead, I find myself renewed, restored, and ready to take on what He calls me to today.

'but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.'  Isaiah 40:31
